Ambur Economic Development Organisation Limited (AEDOL) was formed and registered as a company under the Companies Act, 1956 in July 2001. The main objective of forming AEDOL was to render the required assistance needed by tanneries and leather units in and around Vaniyambadi and Ambur in Chennai.
Vaniyambadi is mainly a tannery town and has around 119 tanneries. The leather clusters in Ambur have three sub-clusters comprising job-working small tanneries, integrated export oriented leather and shoe units, and micro enterprises that produce shoes for the local market. There are a total of 239 units in Ambur. About 43 of them are integrated leather and shoe units that are export oriented. Out of these, 21 have shoe units and the rest have high-quality finished leather.
These clusters lack the basic infrastructure for waste management. They also do not have support services to help their growth. The problem of not achieving progress individually forced them to form a joint company for themselves. This gave rise to the Ambur Tannery Effluent Treatment Company Limited (AMBURTEC) which was registered as a co-operative society in 1984. In 1986, the Vaniyambadi Tanners Enviro Control Systems Limited (VANITEC) was also formed as a company. With increasing interfacing with government bodies, departments and financial institutions, the clusters felt a need to have a more federation-like structure which led to the formation of AEDOL.
In September 2004, AEDOL entered into a memorandum of agreement for project development and implementation. A proposal worth Rs 6,734 lakh was presented to the Government of India through IL&FS which got approved in April 2005. The grant from the Government was to the tune of Rs 4,393.54 lakh.
